Miseria e nobiltAi?? (1887) is perhaps the most successful play by Eduardo Scarpetta. In spite of its fairly predictable plot and certain stereotypes in its characterisation it is, nonetheless, a play with a considerable amount of sensitivity shown towards those characters from real life who must resort to their wits and sheer survival instinct in order to overcome hard times. In this case it is because of extreme poverty and hunger that some characters are forced into the pretension of wanting to appear different from what they really are, and we can only sympathise with them as Scarpetta no doubt intended. Above all, Scarpettaai??i??s aim was to entertain and, indeed, this play is full of thoroughly amusing situations which are brilliantly captured and developed by means of a racy and highly enjoyable dialogue which manages to involve the audience in the action on stage.
